Change is a coming!

The blogging silence is due to one thing only – I’m about to change my business name and get a brand new website!! So I’ll be waving goodbye to The Itchy Eyes and introducing Tricia King Photography.  Coming out of hiding! Scary, yes, hella scary but it will be awesome!  All fresh and clean with new work a snazzy new logo and all new packaging.  So I’m saving all my cool stuff up for the new website.  Expect to be flooded with posts upon post upon post.

In the meantime, here are some moments from a few of the many awesome weddings I’ve photographed recently, just to tide you over.

The Previous Ten Days

My previous ten days have been completely bonkers but insanely fun.  Five weddings plus three other shoots in ten days.  Or something like that. I’m too brain dead right now to remember.

I’ve met some great people in the last ten days. Some great families and friends.  I’m stupidly thankful to be able to share their day.  I’m not going to preach to you about what a huge day it is for families.  Never underestimate the gravity of a wedding day. I get to be there for all of it. It’s pretty cool.

Here is one frame from each special day.

100 moments

2013 huh. It was quite the year. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have travelled far, met some beautiful kind people and enjoyed time with my family. I am also pretty proud of the body of work I’ve produced.

So this is the token 2013 roundup post. There are a billion images below so pack yourself some lunch, grab a cuppa and settle on in.  But it’s only a fraction of the things I have seen.

Thank you to every single person who appears in the images below for letting me do what I do and being so stoked with the results.

I’m already twice as booked out in 2014 than I was in the whole of 2013 so I predict my 2014 post in a year’s time will be quite the marathon.

Rhys and Desta

I’m super excited to finally blog the full wedding of Rhys and Desta from earlier this year.  I didn’t share earlier because the amazing Hello May featured the wedding in issue 3 of the print magazine recently and I wanted everyone to see it in all it’s print glory first.  You should still go and buy Hello May if you haven’t already, images look so much better in print.

So Rhys and Desta were married at Kennilworth Homestead.  It was my first “whole weekend” wedding – I’d never really got why people had weddings out of the way so that people had to stay overnight – but after their wedding I totally get it.  It was a weekend celebration, not simply a celebration that started at a 3pm ceremony and ended when everyone called cabs. I totally understand now.

People started arriving on the Friday and friends and family were instrumental in creating the space for the reception in the hall.  We hung lights, layed out tables, cut and decorated with flowers.  All hands made for light and fun work.  Dads and other dudes got the BBQ going and everyone hung out on the lawn for the night before hitting the cabins.

The next morning the sun shone bright.  It was one of those glorious days.  There was a breakfast BBQ and (thank heavens) a coffee truck for those that were awake. Desta’s sisters camped out at a neighbouring B&B and preened themselves and patted nearby horses.  Desta and her sisters looked INCREDIBLE in their dresses which were designed and created by hand by her sister Safa at AMIRA. Rhys stayed on site and worked to get the final finishing touches on their amazing DIY wedding done right up until the final moments before he was ushered off to get ready.

And then the storm came in.

Everyone put BOM on their phone and watched in horror.  The wedding was delayed for half hour as there was the hope it would pass.  But it wasn’t going to.  Finally a decision was made to move inside the old hall at Kennilworth, an act which I think was possibly a blessing in disguise.  Before it was going to be out amidst the rolling mountains.  The rolling mountains are beautiful, it’s undeniable, but the beauty is challenged by the beauty of 30 of their closest friends and family working together to fill a hall with love and trimmings.  The bridal party walked the length of the hall under the bunting, across the petals to a cast of beaming family and friends to the groom.  He was so overwhelmed at the sight he could hardly look up.

The rest of the day was a blur of awesome.  My favourite marriage celebrant Paul Voge led the proceedings and laughed a knowing laugh when the couple read their independently written but almost identical vows.  Ruffy dog took pride of place being the first to walk in and generally getting lots of lady love all night, the guy certainly knows how to attract the ladies (for the previous 24 hours I’d seen a string of babes at the end of his lead).  The food was good, the music was loud, life was pretty sweet.

And rather than have to catch a cab home or someone be the designated driver, we all just crashed in our cabins and woke up again the next morning to the wondrous sound of the coffee van.

I totally get it.

Chasing Waterfalls

Tim and Demi entertained the idea of a big wedding, but then they just couldn’t wait. Planning a big wedding seemed so far away and they just wanted to get married. So in only six weeks they plotted and planned and schemed and came up with their divine surprise wedding. Friends came along to their favourite bowls club for an engagement party, the couple greeted guests for an hour or so and then slipped off sliently. Under the stairs Demi got ready, whilst watching the CCTV of her guests being asked to climb the back stairs up to the main room. At the top of the stairs they saw a sign and Tim at the altar. Gasps, tears, shock, beaming happiness. There were no “I *knew it*” because nobody ever suspected a thing. It was stealth and secret.

Given their wedding was a surprise and in the late evening, we decided to do formal photos after the wedding. We started back at the same bowls club – the vacant block of land next door with the amazing iron sculptural pipes had been teasing Tim and I every time we met, we knew we had to climb the fence and get in there. Then Demi directed us up Samford way, to a waterfall they’d come to early in their relationship. She delicately tiptoed over the rocks, barefoot, divine in her while dress. I slid on my ass in my jeans. We made some great images.

Please enjoy one of my most down to earth, honest, loving couples ever in what is easily my dream location shoot.

PS. for some reason I’ve been listening to a ton of TLC lately (and even watched the doco on Lisa Left Eye Lopez whilst editing recently) in case you didn’t pick it from the title.

Punk Wedding

This is not meant to be a full blog post by any means, it’s just that I can’t help myself and so I’m posting a few more images to compliment the leaks already on my Facebook page.  You might have seen the image from the shoot I did the week before their wedding (which is one of my favourite images of all time). Last weekend I was super lucky to photograph the wedding of two very good friends in one of the most special weddings I’ve been a part of so far.  I was pretty thrilled to be there as well as to document it.   Not only this, but my girls were flower girls.  Explosions of cuteness all around. Cinema Fashion

I was lucky enough a while back to work with some of my favourite fashiony people on a shoot.  As a wedding photog, fashion is not my every day, its an occasional treat.  BUT I LOVE IT!  And it’s such a treat to work with professionals in this field – accomplished stylists, models and make up artists.

Fashion is so different to my normal shoots – weddings are highly constructed and I have a role as the observer which I neatly slot into, family shoots are also about capturing the essence of something which already exists.  Fashion is about creating something which didn’t exist before.  It’s about a group of people coming together, each bringing their expertise to the table to create a combined vision.  As a solo shooter and documentary photographer I find this concept both exciting and mind-blowing.

Looking forward to getting this crew together again soon to work on something new.

This was shot mostly in the back of the gutted out old New Farm Cinema – which was an amazing place in its day and its so sad to see it abandoned and half demolished.  Glad we were able to create something good among the ruins.

Waterfall Wedding

I was remiss and only put these shots on my Facebook but I know I should blog more!  We went up to a waterfall to take the bridal shots.  The bride – Demi – is so amazing and nimble and like a dancer as she jumped sliently across the rocks. More than once I gasped, worried about the falls below.  She was so gracefull.  But not me.  I slide down the hill and crawled over the rocks in my jeans on my ass.  A little bit scared, a little bit concerned about the $6K of camera equipment around my neck, a little hesitant about the slippy rocks.  But we did it and got some of my most favourite images to date.

Here is a peek at a few of those images.  More to come soon.
